Send the photo. That is genuinely the whole process — Jenny paints from it and sends progress pictures as she goes, so nothing is a surprise at the end. A clear, well-lit photo taken at your pet's eye level makes the strongest painting, and she will say so if the one you have picked will not work.

Any medium is available — acrylic, oil or watercolour. Most pet portraits are painted in acrylic on 11″ × 14″ gallery-wrapped canvas with the sides painted, so no frame is needed. Several photographs can be combined into one painting, and the background can be changed to somewhere that means something — one commission moved the dog into the rhododendrons at the corner of the garden where the family always took their pictures.
